Rhythm Instruments

The percussion family of instruments holds the most significant part in the orchestra. It includes instruments that generate unique sounds when hit, scraped, or shaken at the right strength at the right place and time. It takes an immense amount of practice to become a master percussionist.

Percussion instruments are essential for a musician due to their extensive usage in all forms of music. They help in keeping the rhythm, making unique sounds, and adding color to the orchestra. Percussionist often enjoys diverse opportunities – from playing full or part-time at orchestras to recording film sound tracts to performing live- anything is possible.

Unlike other instrument players, a percussionist has to play several instruments in one piece of music. Some common percussion instruments are timpani, celesta, gongs, bass drum, snare drum, cymbals, xylophone, piano, triangle, etc.

Percussion instruments are divided into two categories- pitched and unpitched. Pitched percussion instruments produce notes with an identifiable pitch. This includes instruments like xylophone, piano, or timpani. An unpitched percussion instrument such as bass drum, cymbals, or castanets produces notes without any identifiable pitch.
